P4/P5 Exploring Scottish Heritage

11th May 2026

Our P4/5 children recently took part in an exciting and engaging workshop delivered by the Sir Hans Sloane Centre. The session provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils to explore elements of Scottish heritage, with a particular focus on clans, coats of arms, and traditional tartan design.

The workshop was made even more special as we were joined by our Shared Education partner school, Killyleagh Integrated Primary School. It was fantastic to see pupils from both schools working together, sharing ideas, and learning collaboratively in such a creative environment.

Throughout the session, the children learned about the history and significance of Scottish clans and how coats of arms were used to represent family identity. They also discovered the unique patterns and meanings behind tartans, gaining an appreciation for this important cultural tradition.

The highlight of the day was designing their own clan tartans. Using their creativity and imagination, each child created a unique pattern to represent their own “clan.” The results were colourful, thoughtful, and a true reflection of their learning.

We are incredibly proud of how well the children engaged with the workshop and with one another. It was a fantastic example of learning, creativity, and partnership in action!
